The properties, which are in some of the remotest areas of the South West and previously suffered internet speeds as slow as 1Mbps, have been upgraded to ultrafast full-fibre-to-the-property internet with speeds of up to 1Gbps, in time to work from home and stay connected during quarantine.
Gigaclear, the UK’s leading ultrafast internet provider to hard-to-reach rural communities, continues to build its network in the area despite having its contract with CDS cut short in 2019.
Jo Scarrott, South West General Manager at Gigaclear, says, “This is an unprecedented number of connections in one month. Demand is obviously very high right now and we’re working at an extreme pace to get everyone connected, despite the challenges we are now working to due to our vital social distancing measures.
“We made the decision to continue building our network in the South West without support from the local BDUK partner because the people of rural Devon and Somerset want to be connected to ultrafast internet. I’m so glad we chose to stay because otherwise these 966 properties would’ve been stuck without any connectivity or low speeds at the worst possible time.”
Gareth Williams, CEO of Gigaclear, says, “Gigaclear’s work is considered essential by Government, so we intend to continue our activities maintaining, building and installing new customers on our network where it is safe to do so. Never has connectivity been more important for the communities we have built to and those we are still working to reach. Following guidance to take additional precautions and physical distancing, Gigaclear field-based employees and our contractor partners are continuing work in communities where possible and safe to do so.
“This is to ensure we are able to extend our network to communities who rely on our infrastructure and service to keep them connected. This means that they can work effectively from home, access key public services online and continue to educate their children during school closures.”
