My Wi-Fi

How can I connect a wireless device to my Wi-Fi?

To connect a wireless device such as a smartphone or tablet to the Wi-Fi, first ensure it is within range of the router you are using. Open up the Wi-Fi list on your device and select the SSID or network name that matches the one on our router. You then just need to enter the password and in future it should connect automatically.

How can I get the best out of my Wi-Fi?

Wireless service can be troublesome no matter which ISP you use. Now that you have a fibre-optic connection into the home it makes sense to make sure you maximise the quality of the network within your home.

How do I change my Wi-Fi password?

To change your password, you will need to access your router by connecting it to a computer with an Ethernet cable. Then simply type 192.168.1.254 into the URL address bar of your web browser. Once this is done, log on with the username and password from the sticker on the front of the router.

We will be happy to talk you through all of this if that would help. Just give us a ring on 01865 591131 or send us a message to support@gigaclear.com.

I'm experiencing slow speeds over my Wi-Fi, what can I do?

To get the best speed over Wi-Fi, please read our Home Networking Guide

Wi-Fi currently cannot compete, in terms of both speed and reliability, with a hard-wired Ethernet cable connection. Speed tests run wirelessly will only show what that device is capable of, not what speed your broadband can ultimately provide.

For example, if you can browse the web easily on the device then a wireless speed test can hopefully be disregarded. As a guide, 15mb/s is enough for a 4K TV stream and that is ample for any mobile device needs.

My Wi-Fi coverage is poor, what can I do?

To get the best speed over Wi-Fi, please read our Home Networking Guide

The distance over which you can connect devices wirelessly varies dramatically based upon different elements, such as the materials your home is made of and interference from other networks or devices.

When the router is installed, keep the space between the router, and the areas you intend to connect from, free from large objects including fish tanks, refrigerators and mirrors. Also place the router high up rather than on the floor and not next to thick walls or metal.

You may also be able to improve things using extra kit such as Wireless Access Points or Meshing Nodes or through alternative methods of connection. We are happy to offer you advice and have prepared a guide for you to read that should help. You can download and view it by clicking here

My Wi-Fi keeps dropping out, what should I do?

To get the best speed over Wi-Fi, please read our Home Networking Guide

Wireless connectivity can be prone to interruption from various sources, including other access points and electrical devices around your home. Correctly setting the Wi-Fi channel will mean that interference from other electrical items will be reduced.

You can also add extra kit such as Wireless Access Points or Meshing Nodes to build the strength of your network in all corners of the home.

What is the difference between broadband and Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi and broadband are often discussed as if they are the same thing. However, they should really be considered separately. Through our ultrafast full fibre network, you will be getting the fastest type of connection available to you, the limits of fibre-optic are nowhere near fully explored.

This can put pressure on the local network; it's worth considering how you're going to make use of this around the home: could you cable the bigger devices? What will manage total Wi-Fi coverage? Happy to offer any guidance that might be needed.

Where can I find my Wi-Fi password?

Your initial/default WPA2 wireless password is printed on the label on the router as well as within the instruction booklet. You may change this password.

If you have lost this documentation, or there are any other issues with your password, we can reset it for you so you can re-enter a new one of your choice.

Just send us a message to support@gigaclear.com or give us a ring on 01865 591131 to discuss it further.
