Communities in some of the most rural parts of Devon, who were struggling with slow and unreliable internet connections, can now access some of the fastest speeds in the country thanks to a £2.5million commercial investment in ultrafast, broadband by Gigaclear, the leading provider of full fibre broadband to rural communities.
Villages including Upottery, Yarcombe and Rawridge can now take advantage of speeds of up to 1,000Mbps (1Gbps) when previously they had been limited to speeds as slow as 1Mbps. The installation of fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband will benefit over 2,000 properties across the Blackdown Hills area, and is already revolutionising the experience of homes and businesses that have signed up.
Nigel Wyatt, manager of the Sidmouth Arms in Upottery, one of the first businesses in the area to connect to the service, commented: “We’ve been struggling with terrible internet connection for many years, so to have even decent broadband would be great, but actually the speed we have now is amazing. We chose Gigaclear’s 100Mbps service, which means we can do things like stream movies perfectly. Perhaps even better, it’s good for business – the WiFi coverage in the bar is fantastic!”
Upottery Parish Councillor, Graham Long, who has been a campaigner for full fibre connectivity to the area, said: “It’s a really positive step forward for these rural Devon areas in particular and a great example for other rural communities struggling with poor connections. I am delighted that Gigaclear has invested in this area; broadband is now an essential service, so having access to a full fibre network will benefit people across the county.”
With two cabinets now live in the Blackdown Hills area, Gigaclear is focused on continuing the project to deliver full fibre broadband to properties in the Churchinford, Smeatharpe, Sampford Arundel, Ford Street, Clayhidon and Sampford Moor areas.
Joe Frost, Business Development Director at Gigaclear, added: “This is the first of our commercial investments in Devon and we are delighted at the support, enthusiasm and excitement received from local residents and businesses, who are all set to benefit from this transformative communications upgrade. Gigaclear’s investment in this new full fibre network will bring economic and social benefits to the area for many years to come, making it an even more attractive place to live, work and play.”
