Half of the Fastershire phase 2, Area 1 broadband rollout from Gigaclear is now complete

The first area of the Fastershire (Herefordshire and Gloucestershire County Council’s broadband scheme) Phase 2 rollout across the Cotswolds has already reached its halfway mark, with ultrafast broadband provider Gigaclear announcing that it has brought its pure fibre network to over 3,000 properties in some of the most isolated areas of Gloucestershire.

From St. Andrew’s Church of England Primary School in Chedworth, where pupils now have access to the most up to date learning resources, to local pubs, such as the Green Dragon in Cowley where visitors can download a full length HD film quicker than the time it takes to pull a pint of Guinness, the service from Gigaclear has already changed the lives and businesses of many in the area. The new network is also expected to support local farmers diversify into new markets.

The brand new, future-proof pure fibre network has been installed directly at more than to 3,000 homes and businesses, with over 2,000 of these already able to have Gigaclear’s ultrafast broadband service. The network, which has been installed using over 182 miles of fibre cable so far, will give residents and businesses broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps (1000Mbps), up to 30 times faster than the UK average.

Joe Frost, Business Development Director at Gigaclear, said: “Earlier this year, St. Andrew’s school in Chedworth became the 1,000th Fastershire ultrafast property to go live, making it one of the best connected schools in Britain. Now, more than double that number of properties have access to the same blisteringly fast Internet speeds, which is just remarkable when you consider how remote many of the Cotswolds villages are. The pure fibre network is transforming rural communities, giving them the best broadband connection available. We’re now on the home straight for completing the project on time and on budget and are looking forward to thousands more properties being connected by the end of 2017.”

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Fastershire’s partnership with Gigaclear is making superb progress in the Cotswolds. The rollout of ultrafast broadband is already bringing considerable benefits residents and businesses and is well on target to complete by summer 2017.”

Fastershire is the partnership between Gloucestershire County Council and Herefordshire Council to bring faster broadband to the two counties, with funding from central government’s Broadband Delivery UK matched by the local authorities. The project is scheduled to benefit over 6,500 homes and businesses across some of the most isolated areas of the Cotswolds by the end of 2017.
